Kerala Volunteer Trip

  • Volunteer

During my duration in Kerala, I was given the privilege to be able to teach both behavioral management and English to 3rd-4th graders. Given that most of these kids come from poor backgrounds, they are often not taught what is socially acceptable, so I was able to foster an environment where if the student felt “mad,” instead of hitting their friend or shoving them, they channel their anger into something else. By teaching the students how to manage their emotions and constructively channel their anger, I've helped them develop better interpersonal skills and encouraged them to find healthier outlets for their feelings. Overall, these lessons go beyond just academics and can significantly impact their personal and social development.

  • Explore

Exploring the streets of Fort Kochi was a delightful experience! The vibrantly patterned clothing in the little boutiques added color and culture to my surroundings. Kerala is known for its rich tradition of textiles and handicrafts, so it's no surprise that I came across such beautiful pieces. Additionally, exploring the backwaters on a houseboat was an iconic Kerala experience. The tranquil and picturesque backwaters provide a unique opportunity to witness the serene beauty of Kerala's countryside. Cruising along the waterways, surrounded by lush greenery and traditional villages, is a truly magical experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the region's natural splendor.

  • People

My time in Kerala was not only filled with exploration and giving back through volunteering but also enriched by the wonderful people I met along the way. Building meaningful connections and friendships with fellow volunteers can be one of the most rewarding aspects of such experiences. It's truly special when people from different backgrounds and age groups come together and treat each other as equals. Such interactions foster a sense of community and belonging, making you feel supported and understood, even in a foreign land. Volunteering often opens up doors to experiences and encounters that go beyond the initial purpose of giving back. It allows you to see the world from a different perspective, connect with people on a deeper level, and gain valuable insights that can shape your worldview. Remember, the impact of such experiences is not only about what you give to the community but also about what you receive and learn from it.
